Thank you for your interest in our program. If you are reading this it means that you already have the desire to help those in need, so do we!
Today, our world faces two persistent challenges: ignorance and indifference. These are not new, but their consequences continue to harm communities around the globe. At Kalan Kuxtal, we believe that through education, compassion, and ethical service, we can be part of the solution — and we invite you to join us in that mission.
This program is the result of years of experience working with nonprofit organizations and mentoring hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in healthcare. Many of them sought meaningful, hands-on clinical experiences within real-world primary care settings — and we listened.
Kalan Kuxtal was designed with both volunteers and communities in mind. We know that as a volunteer, you want more than just observation. You want to connect with patients, learn from real cases, and understand how trust is built between physician and patient. You want to feel confident, challenged, and supported as you grow in your medical journey.
This program delivers on that promise. Over the course of six days, you’ll work side-by-side with a primary care physician, interact directly with patients, and make diagnostic and treatment suggestions — always under professional supervision. Rather than limiting you to basic tasks like vital signs or note-taking, we provide an immersive experience where you’ll apply problem-oriented medical records and evidence-based medicine in a community-based setting.
In addition, we offer a 6-hour on-site medical course covering high-yield topics such as infectious diseases, basic life support (BLS), and prenatal care. If you’re interested, you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in a scientific research project, which may lead to publication and enhance your academic résumé.
Our clinic environment is carefully designed to offer real clinical exposure while fully respecting patient privacy, dignity, and safety, in line with the ethical principles of beneficence and non-maleficence.
We also believe that medical education should be dynamic, engaging, and practical. Our medical staff is selected not only for their clinical expertise but also for their dedication to teaching. We strive to make complex concepts clear, memorable, and relevant — ensuring your learning is both effective and enjoyable.
As you can see, our program offers a holistic, ethical, and transformative experience. It’s a unique opportunity to support underserved communities in Guatemala while gaining invaluable personal and professional growth. We can’t wait to welcome you.
Sincerely yours!
